Street Seats

I was part of a multidisciplinary group of designers who worked in partnership with The New York City Department of Transportation to design and build a public seating space on 5th Avenue and 13th Street, occupying two parking spaces for the duration of six months. I took a design leadership role, and managed the procurement and fabrication of the bamboo street seat modules.

This 40ft solid bamboo seating structure acts as a multi-level planter creating an organic separation between the road and sidewalk while providing six cantilevered benches. The plants in this structure are suspended in pouches made with recycled water bottles. The structure was built in modular sections with highly economic use of material, and assembled sequentially on site. This project encourages the use of sustainable materials with a lighter environmental impact in the design and construction industry.
